Telling Stories That Matter – A Look Back at NCompass (2017)
In 2017, I had the privilege of working on a project that was a little different from the usual business-oriented content we often produce at Left Mind Media. This one wasn’t about selling a service or promoting a product—it was about people, purpose, and impact. And it was one of the most meaningful projects I’ve been a part of.
The organization was NCompass, a nonprofit committed to empowering and equipping youth in Haiti through education, mentorship, and community support. Their work is rooted in relationship, dignity, and sustainability. They focus on long-term change—not short-term charity—and their programs reflect that deeply held belief.
This opportunity came to me thanks to my good friend Stephen Hodges, who, along with his wife Ashley, has been involved with NCompass for years. Both of them appear in the final video we created, lending their voices and stories to help others see the heart behind the mission. The project also featured Katy Matheney, the CEO at the time, who provided valuable context and leadership on-camera and behind the scenes.
A Different Kind of Production
Unlike a typical commercial shoot where we control every frame, this was a beautiful mix of provided footage from Haiti and interviews shot stateside with key volunteers and team members. The challenge—and the opportunity—was to take these very different pieces of content and weave them into a unified story. Not just a highlight reel, but a message that conveyed urgency, hope, and human connection.
The editing room became the mission field, in a way. My job was to connect the dots emotionally, visually, and narratively—to make someone watching feel the mission of NCompass, whether they had ever been to Haiti or not.
The result was a video that they used not only on their website, but also in donor presentations, fundraising campaigns, and community outreach. It wasn’t just a piece of content—it was a tool for growth. A way to connect hearts and open doors.
Why It Still Matters
Looking back, this project reminds me why I started Left Mind Media in the first place. Yes, we help businesses grow and get leads and stand out in crowded markets. But at our core, we’re storytellers. And the story of NCompass—told through the voices of Stephen, Ashley, Katy, and others—was one that needed to be heard.
It was an honor to play a small part in helping amplify that message.
Thank You
To Stephen—thank you for trusting me with something so close to your heart.
To Ashley and Katy—thank you for showing up on camera and sharing real, honest stories.
To NCompass—thank you for the work you do. The world needs more of it.
